The People Behind The People Place

The seeds for The People Place were planted in Los Angeles, CA over 10 years ago when Robyn Murgio and Kazia Cumbler founded “Mama Needs a Drink” — a weekly support group for new parents. Kazia is a mom of two, a marriage and family therapist, and a DONA-certified postpartum doula. Robyn is a mom of two, and before  having kids, she worked in museum education and designed baby and home goods. Robyn and Kazia have chosen to make “parenthood” their full-time jobs, whether that’s by caring for their own brood or supporting other parents’ journeys in their classes.

The People Place officially opened in the Culver City Arts District in September 2023. Their mission is to be a nonjudgemental, safe space that teaches conscientious parenting techniques and helps families build community. TPP offers a myriad of classes each week and continues to expand their schedule every month.

FAQ’s

  • We pick and and choose best practices across multiple parenting philosophies. We do focus primarily on conscientious parenting. This means we encourage parents to be thoughtful about their words and actions, really validating their children’s experiences. We explore the idea that our job as parents is to be a witness to our child’s feelings and inner experience as opposed to teachers and problem solvers.

  • Yes! First time families can drop into either our infant or movers class for a complimentary first class. You will still need to create your profile via Sawyer and choose “Free Trial Offer” at checkout.

  • If you’ll be out of town or you or your baby aren’t feeling well, we are happy to move you into another class time for that week, assuming there is space. However, we strongly encourage our members to remain in the class time they originally signed up for to deepen relationships between the other parents & little ones.

  • They sure are! We love second, third and fourth time moms (but after four you’re such an expert that you could probably run one of our classes yourself)! We also offer classes for toddler parents. You can view our full schedule here.

  • At our infant groups, we observe our babies as they are, while finding connection with each other. We sit together around our cozy carpet with the babies laying on their blankets, feeding, or observing each other. We always check in with everyone to see what’s been going on for them, their baby and family that week. At the end of class we present a conversation topic to the group to discuss. The topics focus on parent and baby, health and wellness, bonding and also explore our parenting philosophy.

  • We require that all adult members be fully vaccinated from Covid and that the babies follow a regular vaccination schedule as prescribed by their pediatrician. Please contact us with any questions about this policy.

  • There is metered parking south of Washington Blvd as well as in front of our building.

  • Yes! We offer complete or partial rentals depending on the size & duration of your event. We love to host birthday parties, baby naming ceremonies, photoshoots, and private classes. Feel free to email us for more information. info@thepeopleplacela.com

  • If you are enrolled in our infant or movers class, you are allowed to attend a different session as a make-up class within the same week. To confirm your change, please email info@thepeopleplacela.com with which class you’d like to attend instead. Unfortunately, there are no make-up classes for our toddler playgroup, or Dad’s groups.

  • We allow members to pause their membership 2 times/year for at least 2 weeks and up to the rest of the calendar year. Note that if you pause your membership, you risk losing your spot in your class, but we will do everything we can to accommodate your return. To submit your pause or cancellation request, please fill out this google form and allow 72 hours for processing. Please note we must receive your request in the month prior to your pause or cancellation date.
